What is a forklift attachment?

If you are looking for more details, kindly visit how does attachment affect the capacity of the forklift.

A forklift attachment is a device that is attached to the forklift by means of either slipping over the existing truck forks, or locking onto the forklift truck carriage, that when fitted, de-rates the forklifts truck capacity. I.E. any device that influences the trucks rated capacity by moving the load centre out, is deemed to be an attachment

The scope of attachments can be vast and varied, with quality attachments on the market for use with forklift trucks ranging from drum handlers, lifting jibs, sweepers, loading shovels, carpet booms etc.

When the attachment is fitted to the forklift truck, the weight (mass) of the attachment must be taken into account, along with the increased load centre, in order to re-calculate the forklifts rated lifting capacity

All quality attachments should come supplied with a complete set of working instructions to ensure safe operation by the user and to allow production of risk assessments if required. All attachments must be Thorough Examined (given an MOT) every 12 months at the latest, although some attachments, dependent upon their nature and purpose, sooner.

Weight of Attachment

You need to be aware that the weight of the attachment when fitted to the forklift truck, will affect the trucks rated lifting capacity. I,E, if you have a 5 ton forklift and wish to lift a load that weights 3 ton, using a jib attachment that weights 500kgs, then the total weight the forlift will be lifting is 3.5 ton. It can be easy to forget about the weight of the attachment in these circumstances only to find out that the truck load and attachment weight combination may be outside of the forklifts safe working limits

Type of Attachment

With a whole host of attachments on the market, take the time to ensure you have identified the correct attachment to suit your business needs. Identify and using the correct attachment can pay dividends when it comes to reducing operational costs, increasing health & safety and speeding up productivity
