Piston compressor pump is a common compression device used to compress and transport gas or liquid. It consists of one or more pistons reciprocating in the cylinder, which generates pressure by compressing air or gas, and pushes the gas or liquid into the pipe or container. This kind of compressor pump has simple working principle and reliable structure, and is widely used in industrial manufacturing, automobile maintenance, medical equipment, laboratory research and other fields. By adjusting the movement of the piston and the design of the cylinder, different pressure and flow outputs can be achieved to meet the needs of different applications.

The working principle of the piston compressor pump is based on the reciprocating movement of the piston in the cylinder to realize the compression and delivery of gas or liquid. When the piston moves upward, the volume in the cylinder increases, forming a negative pressure, so that the gas or liquid is sucked into the cylinder; while when the piston moves downward, the volume in the cylinder decreases, the gas or liquid is compressed, and passes through the outlet pipe or the container is pushed out. This cyclical movement makes the gas or liquid continuously compressed and conveyed in the pump, thus realizing the work of the pump.

Piston compressor pumps can be divided into the following types according to different application scenarios and compression requirements:

Single-stage piston compressor pump: This pump has only one piston and cylinder, which is suitable for low compression ratio occasions, such as general household air compressors.

Multi-stage piston compressor pump: multi-stage pump has multiple pistons and cylinders, through multi-stage compression to achieve a higher compression ratio, suitable for high-pressure gas or liquid compression, such as high-pressure air compressors in the industrial field.

Turbo piston compressor pump: Turbo pump combines the advantages of piston compression and turbo compression, and is suitable for some special applications, such as petrochemical, energy and space exploration.

Piston compressor pumps have the following advantages over other types of compressors:

Simple and Reliable: Because of its relatively simple structure, it operates stably and reliably with low maintenance costs.

High pressure capability: Multi-stage piston compressor pumps can provide high pressure output, suitable for high pressure gas or liquid needs, such as high pressure cylinder filling.

Strong adaptability: The piston compressor pump can be applied to the compression and delivery of different types of gas or liquid, and has high versatility.

Piston compressor pumps are widely used in various fields, mainly including the following aspects:

Industrial manufacturing: Pneumatic tools, pneumatic control systems, compressed air supply, etc. for factories.

Car maintenance: used in the pneumatic braking system of the car, tire inflation, etc.

Medical field: used for air source supply of medical equipment, such as ventilator, dental equipment, etc.

Laboratory research: used for gas supply and pneumatic control in laboratories, such as chemical experiments, biological experiments, etc.

Piston compressor pumps may produce certain noise and exhaust emissions during use. In order to improve its environmental protection and energy efficiency, the following measures can be taken:

Optimized design: reduce energy loss and noise generation by improving the structure and process of the pump.

Select high-efficiency motors: select high-efficiency motors as drive devices to improve energy utilization and reduce energy consumption.

Intelligent control: Equipped with an intelligent control system, it can adjust the operation status of the pump according to the actual demand and save energy.

In order to maintain the good operation of the piston compressor pump, regular maintenance is required, including:

Regular inspection: Regularly check the operating status of the pump, seals and lubricating oil and other components to ensure its normal operation.

Cleaning and maintenance: keep the pump clean, remove dust and dirt regularly to prevent adverse effects on the performance of the pump.

Replacement of worn parts: Once the parts of the pump are found to be worn, they should be replaced in time to avoid damaging more parts.

When using a piston compressor pump, the following items need to be noted to ensure safe and stable operation:

Follow Instructions: Operate the pump in strict accordance with the operating manual and safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer.

Avoid overload operation: Do not allow the pump to run overloaded for a long time, so as not to damage the equipment and save energy at the same time.

Check the safety valve: regularly check the sensitivity and effectiveness of the safety valve to prevent the pressure from exceeding the set value and causing danger.

Piston compressor pump prices vary by model and brand. Generally, the price will be in the hundreds to thousands of dollars. Higher quality and more powerful piston compressor pumps tend to cost more. In addition, there are additional accessories, shipping and installation costs to consider when purchasing. Therefore, it is recommended that you carefully understand the characteristics of various models and brands before purchasing, and compare with multiple suppliers to obtain the piston compressor pump that best suits your needs and budget.

Choosing the Right Pump

The media that needs to be transported is very important when choosing a pump as the characteristics of the pump depend on its viscosity (i.e. the fluid’s resistance to a uniform flow), its suction temperature and whether or not there are solid elements in it. You will need to determine if the media to be transported is chemically neutral or corrosive  in order to choose the pump designed to operate under these conditions.

As a general rule, the more viscous the media, the more difficult the flow through your pumping system, but be careful, the viscosity of media varies according to operating conditions. There are 4 main groups of fluids according to their viscosity level; in the first group there are fluids such as water, oil or alcohol that move in the same way regardless of speed or level of agitation. For these types of uses you will not have many constraints in choosing your pump. In the second group there are certain food products such as butter or cream whose viscosity increases with agitation; therefore, in these cases, a standard centrifugal pump will not be suitable for the fluid flow. The third group includes media that has a threshold to be exceeded before flowing. Once this point is reached, the viscosity decreases with agitation. Adhesives, paints and greases are part of the fourth group that are very thick at rest, but their viscosity decreases if constant agitation is maintained.

Generally, for low viscosity fluids (the first and second group) centrifugal pumps are the most suitable because the pumping action generates a high shear rate of the fluid, as the viscosity increases you will have to take into account the additional resistance that the fluid will exert on the shear rate. On the other hand positive-displacement pumps are the best choice for viscous fluids (the third and fourth group) because they operate at lower speeds and the shear energy transferred to the fluids is lower than that of centrifugal pumps.
