Movie Review: Jurassic Park worth seeing again in 3D

If you want to learn more, please visit our website Jurassic world 3D ride motion cinema.

If you haven’t watched the original Jurassic Park movie recently, the new 3D version, in theaters now, is worth seeing. Overall the movie looks great in 3D and still holds up on the big screen 20 years later.

This isn’t a review of the movie itself. Most of you have already seen it. But I recently saw it in 3D with a 14-year-old friend of my son’s who had never seen it. She said she really liked it.

Overall the conversion to 3D was well done, but there were a couple of times when something looked like it was placed too far in the background or 3D was added where it shouldn’t have been. One such time was in an early scene where we’re looking at a reflection in a pond and the reflection is in 3D, as if the reflection has layers beneath the water. A pond’s reflection should be like a mirror’s reflection – flat. But the few not-so-great conversion moments are rare.

Yes the 3D makes the dinosaurs a bit scarier. But none of the 3D effects really come off the screen or pop out at you. The CGI dinos hold up well after 20 years. They look just as realistic as you remember. The story, setting and acting hold up as well. But there are a few dated things in the movie that got a laugh out of the audience in my theater, such as the “cutting edge” CD-ROM one of the kids plays with on screen.

Another unintentional laugh came when John Hammond, the owner of Jurassic Park, stated that he should have built the park in Orlando. Which of course, sort of happened at the Jurassic Park area of Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park. If you’re as much of a frquent visitor to the park as I am, when the Jurassic Park theme song first plays in the movie, you’ll immediately picture yourself walking through the park.

If you’re in Orlando, I suggest watching Jurassic Park 3D at the AMC theater in Universal CityWalk then immediately heading to Jurassic Park in Islands of Adventure. In case you can’t make it to the park anytime soon, come back to this page after you see the movie in theaters and watch my walk through the area and ride on the River Adventure ride below:

Jurassic Park 3D Review

You know the story of Jurassic Park so there's no need to recap it except to say: Amusement park. Cloned dinosaurs. Run for your life. In honor of the 20th anniversary of director Steven Spielberg's blockbuster adaptation of Michael Crichton's bestseller, Universal has converted the film and re-released it as Jurassic Park 3D.

Many films have been converted to 3D for release, but Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace is the best example of an older film being converted to 3D and not exactly wowing people with the 3D results. So is it worth returning to an even older film, Jurassic Park, just for the 3D experience? Yes, it is.

Not unlike Avatar -- the event film most credited with resurrecting the 3D craze -- Jurassic Park 3D works because its setting provides the viewers with a fully immersive experience in that world. Not since audiences took a trip to Pandora has a 3D film really provided such a "you are there" feeling.

Moving through the jungle foliage, hiding from raptors, or dodging a hungry T-Rex were already engrossing in 2D, but the 3D work here is top-notch and makes you feel like you're there on Isla Nublar along with Grant (Sam Neill), Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), Ellie (Laura Dern), Lex (Ariana Richards) and Tim (Joseph Mazzello).

One of the highlights of the film to begin with was the T-Rex attack on the Jeeps and the subsequent Jeep in the trees escape; these two set-pieces seem tailor-made for 3D even though they weren't shot that way. The claustrophobia of Ellie being chased through the compound, or Nedry's (Wayne Knight) fateful encounter in the car with a Dilophosaurus, might seem diminished by 3D; in fact, it's the opposite. The sense of being trapped is amplified and thus it's that much more scarier.

That's not to say the 3D disguises some of the film's weaker aspects. The acting, in particular, seems even "bigger" than it did in 2D; the gaping "Spielberg face" reactions never seemed more over-the-top or repetitive than when seen in IMAX 3D. Also, the continuity goofs (like the open door/close door of the kids' Jeep in the T-Rex attack) are that much more glaring thanks to the format. But Jurassic Park 3D isn't just a sight for the eyes; the remastered sound effects also add greatly to the overall experience. The T-Rex's roar has never been more deafening and terrifying.

If you're on the (electric) fence about going to see Jurassic Park in 3D since it's just as easily available to watch at home in 2D Blu-ray, my recommendation is that catching it in 3D is indeed worth your money. Welcome back to Jurassic Park.
