Rhino Rack FoxWing Awning Review

If you’re looking for a reliable and versatile awning for your vehicle, the Rhino Rack FoxWing Awning might just be what you need. Known for providing up to 270 degrees of coverage, it’s perfect for those who love camping and the great outdoors.

Having experimented with Yakima, ARB, custom racks, and Land Rover OEM racks in the past, I decided to test out Rhino Rack for my new rig, given its Australian Outback heritage. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't as favorable as I had hoped. First, the instructions were unclear—parts like the Jerry Can holders that one would assume go on last actually need to go on first. Additionally, every bolt requires a proprietary Allen wrench, so if you lose it, you're out of luck unless you call Rhino Rack for a replacement.

Product Components and Fitment Issues

I purchased the large tray, light holders, heavy-duty cross bars, and the FoxWing awning. I initially bought but later returned the Jerry can holders, high-lift holder, and spare tire holder, as they didn't fit on the crossbars despite assurances from a rep that we had the correct size.

Installation Challenges

The installation process was both disappointing and amusing. The FoxWing concept is fantastic—an awning that opens to 270 degrees is incredibly appealing. However, storing it away proved to be a nightmare. Even after following the company-provided instructions exactly, the zipper broke. An attempt to apply an unconventional folding method resulted in a second broken zipper after a 400-mile test run.

Material Concerns

The material used for the awning is black, and I doubt it will last more than six months in desert conditions, let alone the two years warranted. A custom-built PVC bag with ample storage material could easily resolve this issue, avoiding the need for excessive effort each time you use the FoxWing.

Practical Advice

I hope others have a better experience than I did. While the concept is great, I strongly recommend making your retailer demonstrate opening and closing the awning on your rig before making a purchase. This is one accessory where you’ll want extra help on hand.

Awnings! What are your thoughts? - Gear Reviews

My opinion on having an awning is that it needs to be dead simple and quick to deploy and stow, or I’ll just be too lazy to use it most of the time.

Previous Experiences

I had a cheap ARB-style awning in the past, which was cumbersome to unroll and roll up. Dealing with velcro and legs was annoying, making me reluctant to use it. The coverage was also inadequate, which further discouraged me.

Optimized Choice

With these experiences in mind, I opted for a Kinsmen hardware awning, which has been promising so far. Not having to deal with poles and guy lines means I'll use it more frequently. It also comes with GFC specific mounting hardware.

Positioning and Practical Usage

The driver's side version suits me best due to my dual swing-out with a bike rack on the passenger side. However, when stowed, the awning limits how far I can open my driver's side panel.
