What are Nonwovens?

Wet wipes are made from what we call nonwoven fabrics. Technically, nonwovens are defined as:

Nonwoven: “A web of fibers held together by a process technology other than weaving. Nonwoven fabrics are broadly defined as sheet or web structures bonded together by entangling fibre or filaments mechanically, thermally or chemically.”

Non-woven technology combines methods from weaving, paper making, and extrusion technologies, providing higher performance than paper. Nonwoven fabrics are softer, stronger, and bulkier compared to paper and offer cost advantages over traditional woven fabrics.

Spun-lace nonwoven is primarily used for wet wipes. Here are two typical fiber types and their properties:

• Polyester (PET)

Polyester is used for its good strength. However, it is hydrophobic and has poor absorbency.

Viscose & Tencel

Made from wood or bamboo pulp, viscose and tencel have good absorbency and strength and are soft, making them ideal for sensitive skin applications.

Other Fiber Types That May Be Used

Cotton

Cotton has excellent absorbency and wicking properties but is not as soft as viscose.

Wood Pulp

Softwood and hardwood pulps have high surface area and good cleaning properties but lack strength.

3) Fabric GSM (grams per square meter = g/m²)

Higher GSM indicates a thicker wipe due to more fibers in the sheet.

Plain/pearl/mesh pattern
